 THE SPITI VALLEY

    Spiti is a cold desert mountain valley located high in the Himalaya Mountains in the north-eastern part of the Indian state of himachal pradesh. The name "Spiti" means "The Middle Land" the land between Tibet and India. The valley and surrounding region is one of the least populated regions in india. Spiti is a beautiful holiday destination in Himachal Pradesh surrounded by mountains. It is not just culture and natural beauty that Spiti offers jeep safari is one of the best off beat rips in india and one of the best way to experiences spiti and the high altitude Himalayas. 

 

Trekking in Spiti is a popular activity as Spiti serves as the base for treks like Pin-Parvati and Parang La. You can also go river rafting in Spiti's spin river. 

Shopping in Spiti can also be quite rewarding experience as it has some of the pure woolen shawls and carpets.

  

 

 Snow leopard and Himalayan Red fox are generally found in Kibbar wildlife Sanctuary and Pin valley National park of Spiti Valley. Kibber wildlife sanctuary is the home of snow leopards, though we must stress that the Snow Leopard remains one of the most elusive animals on the planet, and sightings are not guaranteed. The 500 years old monk’s mummy in meditation pose, one of only a handful mummy of indian origin is situated at remote and desolate village in Indo-Tibet border, 20 km off from Sumdo in the nako-tabo road. The view was amazing as any of Spiti village, but the awe of seeing a mummy in seating posture really gives you goosebumps. 

To reach spiti:

There are 2 road routes leading up to the Trans-Himalayas of Spiti;one from Shimla via the Kinnaur valley, and the other from Manali. Indian identity holders going to Spiti, from Shimla or Manali, do not require permits to enter Spiti. 

Tourists from outside India need inner line permits to enter Spiti through Kinnaur. Spiti's borders start at Samdo [74 km from Kaza] which is quite near to India-China border.  

For communication:

BSNL Sim cards obtained in Himachal Pradesh work in Spiti and some of the lower villages. 

Tourists are advisable to carry enough cash from Manali / Shimla. There are no money exchangers in Spiti.  

You'll find an ATM or two in Kaza, but their functioning is often erratic. 

For accommodation; government as well as private guest houses, are available, some Spitian families, in the higher, more remote villages, have opened up their homes and hearts to travelers.
