Nagapattinam district was formed in 1991 by carving out a portion of Thanjavur district.  Located on the coast of the Bay of Bengal,Nagappattinam was one of the constituents of chola mandalam, acclaimed as the Most prominent among the ancient Tamil Kingdoms. This area finds prominent presence in the Burmese History of 3rd Bc and which also says that a Buddha Viharam was built by Emperor Ashoka here. The same viharam finds a place in Chinese Traveller Hieun Tsang's book too. This is mentioned as Padarithitha in Buddhist literature. Portuguese established a Commercial centre here in 1554 and it led the way for development of Christianity in this region.Nagappattinam was also known as ‘Cholakula Vallippatinam’. This is peninsular delta District surrounded by Bay of Bengal on the East, Palk Straint on the South and land on the West and Northern Side. This District is predominantly. Nagapattinam is one of the oldest port cities of Chola empire. It was called as "Naval Pattinam"- The city of ships.
