Kamatchi amman temple is an ancient hindu Temple dedicated to kamatchi, one of the forms of goddess. Kamakshi, is seated in a majestic padmasana, an yogic posture signifying peace and prosperity, instead of the traditional standing pose . Temple has a speciality golden kopuram. Adi shankaracharya, the famous 8th century CE scholar and saint, re-established the Sri Chakra in this Kamakshi Devi temple in the trough-like structure in that shrine. sankara mutt started a monastery 2500 year back still as one famous place. It is a 12th Century temple in the heart of the town kanchipuram. “Ka” means Goddess Saraswati (God of Education), “Ma” means Goddess Lakshmi (God of Wealth), “Akshi” means Eye. The name in full refers to godessKamakshi with Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Lakshmi as her both eyesit is believed to be built by pallava kings in 6 century A.D.it is the only temple of goddess kamakshi in the city which is known as the city of thousand temples.
