Chennai may be the capital of Tamil Nadu, but Madurai claims its soul. It is second largest district of the state and also known as the Athens of East. It is said that lord Shiva had appeared and drops of nectar falls from his hair so it is named Madurai – mathuram meaning sweetness in Tamil. It is developed well as industrial city as well as education city. The city has a number of historical monuments, with Meenakshi Amman Temple and Tirumalai Nayak Palace being the most prominent.
