THENI
Theni District was formed by the bifurcation from Madurai District in the year 1996.The region covered by present-day Theni District was scarcely populated before the 1900s. In 1886 Mullaperiyar dam project brings some part of water from Periyar River downhill to Cumbum Valley and merge into Mullayar River. This project helped more people to settle down in Cumbum Valley (present day Theni District) the city is famous for the large-scale trading of Cardamom, Cotton, Grapes, Chilli and Textiles. It is also called as "Cardamom City" as large quantities of cardamom trade is done in this region. Vaigai dam, Kumbakarai falls and Suruli falls are the main places of attraction for tourists. Gowmariamman Temple, saneeswara Bahavan Temple, Kannagi temple are important and famous Hindu temples of this district. The city of Theni is the district headquarters.
